The Seattle Mariners take on the Houston Astros. Our MLB odds series has our Mariners Astros prediction and pick. Find out how to watch Mariners Astros.

The Seattle Mariners are getting elite starting pitching on a consistent basis. In an 18-game stretch which began on April 10 (and which continued through April, preceding a loss to the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday, May 1), the Mariners produced a staff ERA of 1.61, which is absolutely remarkable. Usually, there is an appreciable gap between a team's No. 1 starter and its No. 5 starter, but the Mariners are getting high-level performances from each and every member of their starting rotation with little variance or regression from anyone. This organization hasn't done everything right, but it has definitely targeted, cultivated, and sustained young pitchers who show signs of being able to replicate good performances and results. The Mariners started the season slowly but have been a lot better over the past three weeks, rising above the .500 mark and giving themselves a chance in the American League West. With the Houston Astros struggling and the Los Angeles Angels suffering an injury to Mike Trout, the Mariners have a very good chance of finishing in the top two in the West alongside the Texas Rangers. The Mariners' division championship odds are a lot better now than they were at the start of the season.

One big thing to keep in mind as the Mariners prepare for this game is that the Houston Astros might be finding a groove at the plate. The Astros scored eight or more runs in multiple wins over the Cleveland Guardians this week. This comes after the Astros scored eight or more runs twice in the Mexico City Series over the past weekend versus the Colorado Rockies. The bats which were asleep for nearly a full month have finally come alive. Now comes a true test for Houston against the Mariners' tremendous starting pitching. Houston has won four of five, but because of an atrocious 7-19 start, the Astros are still nine games below .500 at 11-20. They need to win this series and continue to make up ground in the division.

Why The Mariners Could Cover The Spread

The Mariners are so utterly dependable when it comes to their starting pitching. George Kirby, in his most recent start, pitched a dominant game — not a no-hitter, but close. He smothered the Arizona Diamondbacks in seven shutout innings. He allowed only two hits and one walk while striking out 12 batters. He was overpowering and fully in control. If Kirby pitches at his best, the Astros won't do much against him.

Why The Astros Could Cover The Spread

The Astros are hitting better, at long last. Scoring eight or more runs in four of five games has translated into victories in four of five games. Everyone on this team has started producing, and that can be contagious in a dugout and batting order. Houston is a different team now, playing the way people expected this team to play before the season began.

Final Mariners-Astros Prediction & Pick

The Mariners' pitching should be viewed as more reliable than the Astros' hitting. Take the Mariners.

Final Mariners-Astros Prediction & Pick: Mariners -1.5
