A midwest, inter-league showdown will shortly be underway when the Chicago White Sox take on the St. Louis Cardinals. Join us for our MLB odds series, White Sox-Cardinals prediction and pick will be revealed.

The White Sox' struggles are clearly evident at this point of the season as Chicago's 6-25 record leaves much to be desired. Not only is Chicago in the midst of a three-game losing streak, but they have only captured three wins in their previous 13 matchups out on the diamond. With righty Brad Keller expected to get the start for Thursday's showdown, can Chicago string together a worthy showing that results in a victory in the win column?

Losers in two of their last three games, the St. Louis Cardinals are looking to pick up the pace as they hold a lackluster 14-17 record 31 games into the lengthy MLB regular season. As it stands, the Red Birds are 5.5 games back of the first-place Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central Standings. In line to get the Thursday evening start on the bump for St. Louis is scheduled to be veteran twirler Sonny Gray who has amassed a 3-1 record along with a shiny 1.16 ERA in four total starts on the season. Will the ‘Cards take care of business or flat on their faces?

Why The White Sox Will Cover The Spread/Win

There's the good, the bad, and the Chicago White Sox. Yes, things have been that ugly for this baseball team located in the south side of Chicago.

Despite the woes, even the worst of teams can find ways to win games. While the offense is bad and the pitching isn't a whole lot better, Chicago will obviously have to rely on starting hurler Brad Keller to get the job done. Yes, the White Sox' 1-13 record away from home suggests that they could be for a whole world of trouble, but the fact that Keller has looked strong up to this point is a good reason to be optimistic if you are a Chicago better. Then again, Keller has only pitched 1.2 innings thus far on the year so take the ‘Sox at your own risk.

Luckily, another standout name that the White Sox need to break out of his slump in the worst ways is in the form of first baseman Andrew Vaughn. A year ago, it was the young, left-handed hitter who bashed 21 homers to go along with 80 RBIs at the plate. However, the beginning of 2024 for Vaughn has been a frustrating one to say the least. He has yet to hit a home run this season and is hitting a measly .193 combined. If Vaughn can even show a glimpse of his previous form from a year ago, then the White Sox will have a snowball's chance to knock off the ‘Cards.

Why The Cardinals Will Cover The Spread/Win

On paper, this appears to be a matchup that the Cardinals cannot let slip through their fingers. In order to avoid coming out flat in the worst way possible, the Cardinals will have to ride with Sonny Gray on the mound. Having been around the block quite a few times now, Gray has remarkably struck out 21 batters in his previous two starts and seemingly is on a tear of late. Furthermore, with only 3 runs surrendered all altogether in his four starts, the White Sox bats may be in for a long day if the 34-year-old right-hander is on his A game.

Most importantly, which version of this offense will show up during the biggest moments of this ballgame? While there is plenty of talent and accomplished hitters throughout the Red Birds lineup, they only rank 28th in the majors in runs scored. Simply put, the combined star power of Nolan Arenado and Paul Goldschmidt will need to torment Chicago's starting pitching en route to a path in covering the spread.

Final White Sox-Cardinals Prediction & Pick

At first glance, the Cardinals enter this contest as heavy favorites, and until the White Sox can prove to the rest of the league that they can start being taken seriously, St. Louis should definitely be the play here. Take St. Louis to cover the spread and put a halt to their recent losing ways.
