It is an NL East affair as the Philadelphia Phillies face the New York Mets. It is time to continue our MLB odds series with a Mets-Phillies prediction and pick.

In game one of the series, it was a ten-inning affair. The Phillies took the 1-0 lead, but the Mets would score two in the second and a run in the third to take the lead. Going into the top of the ninth the Mets led 4-2. Bryson Stott homered to make it a one-run game, and then Alex Bohm was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to tie the game. Stott would hit a sacrifice fly in the tenth inning and the Phillies would win 5-4.

The two are playing an afternoon game on Tuesday. It will be Aaron Nola on the mound for the Phillies. He is 4-2 with a 3.67 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP this year. Jose Butto will be on the mound for the Mets in this one. He is 1-2 on the year with a 3.00 ERA.

Why The Mets Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Mets are 18th in the majors in runs this year while sitting 20th in batting average and 15th in on-base percentage. Further, the Mets are 21st in slugging. Brandon Nimmo has led the way this year. He is hitting .227 on the year with a .374 on-base percentage. He has seven doubles, a triple, and six home runs. This has led to 27 RBIs and 21 runs scored. Joining Nimmo in driving in runs is Pete Alonso. He is hitting just .230 on the year but has a .314 on-base percentage. Alonso has eight doubles and nine home runs, leading to 22 RBIs and 24 runs scored.

Meanwhile, Francisco Lindor has been solid this year. He is hitting .209 on the year but with a .278 on-base percentage. Lindor has eight doubles while also having seven home runs. Further, he has 21 RBIs and 23 runs scored on the year.

Mets pitching is 11th in team ERA while sitting 19th in WHIP, and fifth in opponent batting average. Jose Quintana will be on the mound for the Mets in this one. He is 1-4 with a 5.44 ERA and 1.55 WHIP. In his last two starts, he has given up 12 runs in 7.2 innings of work.

Why The Phillies Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Phillies are second in the majors in runs scored, while sitting 3rd in batting average, third in on-base percentage, and third in slugging. At the quarter-mark of the season, Alex Bohm is showing himself to be a force. He is hitting .329 on the year with a .394 on-base percentage. Bohm has 15 doubles a triple and four home runs. This has led to 33 RBIs. Bohm has also scored 21 times this year. Driving in runs is something Bryce Harper has done well this year. He is hitting .259 on the year with a .381 on-base percentage. Harper has six doubles and nine home runs this year, leading to his 29 RBIs. He also has scored 23 times.

Meanwhile, Kyle Schwarber and Bryson Stott are also playing great this year. Schwarber is hitting just .216, but that is not abnormal for him. He is getting on base at a .319 rate, with nine home runs. He has scored 30 times and driven in 25. Stott has hit .277 on the year with a .371 on-base percentage. He has five doubles, two triples, and four home runs. This has led to 25 RBIs. Further, Stott has stolen ten bases and scored 23 times.

The Phillies are fourth in team ERA this year, sixth in WHIP, and seventh in opponent batting average. It will be Ranger Suarez on the mound for the Phillies in this one. He is 7-0 with a 1.50 ERA and a .72 WHIP. Last time out, he allowed no runs and just three hits in seven innings of work. In his last 37 innings, over five starts, he has allowed just four runs.

Final Mets-Phillies Prediction & Pick

Ranger Suarez has been one of the best pitchers in the majors this year.  He has won seven straight starts, and in the one game he did not get the win, Suarez gave up three runs in five innings and the Phillies beat the Braves. His worst start of the year may have been giving up seven hits and three runs in six innings, but still getting the win. Jose Quintana has not even been close to this level of dominance. Combined with the solid Phillies hitting, take them to win game three of the series on Wednesday with ease.
