L.A. Clippers high-flying forward Blake Griffin will undergo minor surgery on his right knee and is expected to return at some point in January, according to Shams Charania of The Vertical.

Griffin will go through a “clean up” procedure early this week. He has struggled with left calf and knee soreness throughout the season as well, per sources.

The Oklahoma standout put up a 26-7-7 line in 38 minutes during Sunday afternoon's loss to the Washington Wizards.

Griffin has averaged 21 points, 8.9 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game, leading the Clippers to a 20-8 record. The loss signifies not only one in the scoring department for one of the league's best offensive sides, but also a reliable frontcourt playmaker — the second-best in the team after point guard Chris Paul.

The 6-foot-10 power forward played in 35 games last season after suffering a fractured hand in an infamous fight with a member of the Clippers’ equipment staff in January.

Even with his return in April and a 2-0 lead over the Portland Trail Blazers in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs, L.A. lost Griffin and Paul to season-ending injuries in Game 4, losing the next four games thanks to a deflated lineup.

Blake Griffin had surgery in the same knee during his freshman season at Oklahoma in 2008 and had a procedure for a torn left kneecap as a rookie in 2010.

The Clippers will need forwards Marreese Speights and Brandon Bass to step up in his absence, Wesley Johnson could see some extra minutes as well if head coach Doc Rivers chooses to go with a small rotation.
