DeMarcus Cousins took some time away from recent controversy to participate in his annual Santa Cuz event Monday night. He started the event five years ago to help underprivileged families in Sacramento and Alabama, giving out $200 gift certificates to kids for Christmas.

He noticed some of the kids had used their gift cards to purchase unusual gifts for their parents, and told reporters he was impressed with their character.

There was one little girl who bought pampers for her baby sister. It's a kid. You don't expect them to think about things like that. Another kid bought supplies for the house: bed sheets, pillows, lamps. … You don't expect that from kids, especially at Christmas. It shows you how much character these young kids have.

It does [break my heart]. But I'm also impressed at the same time. I appreciate it. We're good. We got good kids coming up. It's impressive.

Cousins has always worn his heart on his sleeve, usually seen as a negative on the basketball court, but this time it was welcomed.

This isn't the first charity he's be gracious with. Cousins has put his money where his mouth on multiple occasions before, a regular ol' Santa Claus.

He has paid for funerals, hosted kids with debilitating diseases, and even held town hall meetings with law enforcement and community officials.

There remains a huge misunderstood part about Cousins. The softer side of him that is powerful when focused.

I know I can change somebody's life. It may be a small thing, but I'm going to do what I can. I'm just doing my part.

Why does he do it really? What's the real reason behind his kindness? It is DeMarcus Cousins after all.

Joakim Noah once stated he's like an emotional roller coaster.

I have a weak area for kids that are 15 and younger. I am just trying to do my part to help out these families, these kids. Put smiles on their faces. Whatever I can do.

I didn't get every toy, every shoe. I didn't, but I spent it with my family. I'm big on family. I was raised up spending every one with my entire family, my brothers, my sisters and my mom.

His own unfortunate situations have given him the compassion to help others.
