Just days removed from partnering with Dwyane Wade in creating his very own Craig Sager tie line, ESPN will honor Craig Sager at the 24th annual ESPY Awards with the Jimmy V Perseverance Award.

Sager, 64, has continued to work through the NBA playoffs despite being in the public eye after announcing his cancer was no longer in remission in April.

The Jimmy V Award is given to icons who have overcome life-changing obstacles and practice the lifestyle of Jimmy Valvano’s motto, “Don’t Give Up… Don’t Ever Give Up.”

Valvano and Sager first worked together in 1991 while covering the Pan American Games in Cuba. Sager found a new level of respect for Valvano as he witness firsthand how the fight Valvano had with cancer did not stop Valvano from doing the things he loved.

This will be the tenth year that the Jimmy V award is being given to a sports figure. Sager will join Kay Yow, Kevin Everett, Don Meyer, George Karl, Anthony Robles, Eric LeGrand, Team Hoyt, Stuart Scott, and Leah and Devon Still as recipients of the award.

Sager is scheduled to complete his fifth cycle of chemotherapy after TNT coverage concludes on June 6. As Sager continues to face cancer head on, it’s amazing to see the words of Jimmy V continue to inspire others to never give up.
