The Miami Heat continued their strong run with an impressive win on Saturday against the Toronto Raptors. Despite their 11-30 start to the season, they are now one the hottest teams in the league and have won 21 of their last 25 games.
One of the players that has made it possible is Dion Waiters, who has been clutch and scoring for them when needed. The 25-year-old may only have signed a two-year deal (second year is a player option which he is expected to waive) with the Heat last July, but he already knows what his eventual decision will be when he becomes a free agent.
He recently revealed via Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald that he has given it a lot of thought and he wants to remain in South Beach to continue what they have started.
“If you don’t think like that, you’re crazy. I am enjoying this thing. Whatever it takes [this summer], I just want to be here. What we’re building here, we have a chance to do something special.
“I want to get it done as quick as possible. Let’s keep this thing rolling by any means. I don’t want to go into free agency with a couple days and make a decision. I don’t want that. I know where I want to be. Let’s just get it done. My mom loves it here. Would be mad at me [if I left]. My son loves it. My family loves it.”
Waiters added that he dreams of staying with the Heat until he wins a championship with the franchise.
“Every day I’m in the locker room, I always look at the [Heat championship] pictures, always look at the champagne showers. I have visions about that every day. I ain’t going to stop working until I get to that point.”
This is certainly good news for the South Beach faithful as their new crowd favorite is vocal about his intentions for his future. With Dwyane Wade leaving them last summer, Waiters’ commitment may somehow ease the pain they still might feel. More importantly for them, they will have the chance to continue cheering for “Philly Cheese” and give them more reason to believe that lost glory may soon return to their storied franchise.
