According to Marc Stein of ESPN, the Mavericks and power forward Dirk Nowitzki have agreed to a 2-year deal worth $40 million. The second year of the deal is believed to be a player option. This gives Dirk the flexibility and leverage to make sure the Mavericks are doing enough for him to stay in Dallas.

The longtime Maverick seems to be cashing out on some of his previous accomplishments with the franchise. Although, that is not to say that another team would not have offered the max if he entertained meetings with them. The Mavericks' owner Mark Cuban has continuously tried to keep the team contending for as long as Dirk is still in the league. After striking out while going after some of the bigger name free agents, the Mavericks were able to land Harrison Barnes and Andrew Bogut.

Although acquiring Barnes and Bogut are fine moves, it will probably not propel them past the likes of Golden State and San Antonio in the Western Conference.

Dirk averaged 18.3 points and 6.5 rebounds last year but the Mavericks failed to make it out of the first round. Dallas has not moved past the first round since their lustrous title run in 2011. This trend will likely continue this year as the Mavericks have a fine roster, but are not legit championship contenders.
