This time last year, the Dallas Mavericks thought they had acquired vital piece to their championship puzzle in DeAndre Jordan. They got a verbal agreement that he would sign a four-year, $80 million max contract. The only issue was that Jordan got cold feet and reneged.

As Hassan Whiteside has yet to sign his new agreement with the Miami Heat, conspiracy theorists are hypothesizing on what could happen if he pulls a DeAndre and also breaks his verbal deal with Miami.

Last week, after a nervous wait for Heat fans, Whiteside agreed to resign on a four-year deal worth about $98 million depending on where the final salary-cap number ended up.

Jordan has shown us how players can change their mind before formalizing a verbally agreed arrangement. In fact, that isn’t the first time that this has occurred. In 2009, Hedo Turkoglu opted out of a verbal agreement with Portland to sign with Toronto and Carlos Boozer did the same to Cleveland in 2004, signing with Utah instead.

In the unlikely but possible scenario that Hassan Whiteside changes his mind on Miami, it could create a chain reaction that would undermine many of the major free agency movements.

We all know that the Dallas Mavericks offered Whiteside a max contract which he turned down, but they were under very different circumstances. Now that Miami Heat’s championship outlook has become a lot bleaker with the departure of Dwayne Wade to Chicago, the Mavs offer could a lot more attractive deal to Whiteside.

Should he ultimately choose the Mavs, possibly on a max deal, they would need to pull their offers from both Harrison Barnes and Andrew Bogut.

Barnes and Bogut would then need to return to the Warriors, who would no longer be able to afford Kevin Durant.

To prevent this from all happening, the Mavs signed Barnes at the first possible moment – and they did it in handcuffs as a joke about last year's DeAndre situation. Although it didn't happen, it's pretty scary just to think about the fact that it could have.
