At 11-1, the Dallas Cowboys are already on the verge of clinching the NFC's number one overall seed. If Seattle loses to Green Bay and Dallas comes out on top against the Giants this Sunday, the top seed will be sealed.

The prospect of the Cowboys finishing first in the NFC seemed unlikely in the offseason, especially when Tony Romo went down again. Then, Dak Prescott took the reins of the Cowboys' high-octane offense, and they never looked back.

Initially, the Cowboys declared that Romo would start once his recovery was complete, but Prescott never opened the door for his return. Now, Tony is serving the role of mentor to his young successor.

In the offseason, Dallas has a big decision: do they trade Romo so he can start else where?

For now, he remains a Cowboy, and he's only a play away from coming in if the injury bug hits Dak. With that in mind, owner Jerry Jones is considering giving Romo game reps down the stretch so that he's up to speed should he need to replace Prescott in the playoffs.

The return of Romo?

From Jon Machota of The Dallas Morning News:

“I want to do what gives us the best chance to have Tony contribute to a championship. I do want Tony to be ready to go in case that Dak should have an issue, health wise. That gives us strength going into the playoffs. Not from the standpoint of necessarily protecting Dak … but from the standpoint of having Tony the readiest to come in and play, would be my quick assessment.”

It's safe to say the Cowboys have the most depth at the quarterback position in the league, providing them with a safety net that no other team has. It's not exactly Drew BledsoeTom Brady in 2001, but it would follow the same basic storyline if Romo has to fill in for an injured Prescott with the season on the line.
