With his hilarious antics on social media, it makes it very difficult to believe everything that Joel Embiid says like when he mentioned earlier this season that he wants to play point guard in the future. Despite the skepticism that surrounded his revelation, he recently made it clear that he is serious about it.
After seeing other big men running plays for their team like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Kevin Durant, the Philadelphia 76ers center doesn’t see any reason for him not to do it as well. He discussed the confidence he has with his game and also what he needs in order for him to be a good point guard.
“Yeah, deadass. I’m really serious. I feel like I’m willing to learn, and I feel like I can do anything on the basketball court, and if I had someone to teach me how to be a point guard, I think I can. Obviously, guarding other point guards would be kind of tough. But, you know, if I get the chance to do that, that’s what I want to do.”
Despite standing as tall as the two aforementioned forwards, Embiid has a different skill set than them as he is more of a center. Even if he occasionally shoots from the perimeter, he still thrives more inside the paint with his strong inside moves.
However, given the success he’s had so far this season after coming off a pair of foot injuries the past two years, it will hard to bet against him being an effective point guard someday as long as he gets enough lessons and training for it.
