During the All-Star break, Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James made headlines for more that just his on-court performance. He also announced that he would begin filming Space Jam 2 this summer.

This set the sports world ablaze. The news led many to speculate on the eventual release date of the long-awaited film. As of Thursday night, we might finally have a set date. According to James' production company, Springhill Entertainment, the movie is set to be released July 16, 2021.

The original Space JamĀ starred NBA legend Michael Jordan. It told the fictional story of the gap between Jordan's retirement from basketball in 1993 and his comeback to the league in 1995. In the cult classic, Jordan teams up with the Looney Tunes to take on the villainous Monstars, a group of aliens that stole the talents of other NBA stars.

On Wednesday, Denver Nuggets star Isaiah Thomas jokingly Tweeted that he could play a role in the new film. He suggested that he could take the role of Muggsy Bogues, the one-time Hornets point guard who appeared in the original.

Among the other NBA stars that made appearances in the 1996 film included Larry Bird, Charles Barkley, Shawn Bradley, Patrick Ewing and Larry Johnson.

The rumored July 16th, 2021 release date would fall almost 25 years after the theatrical release of the original. Back in September of 2018, it was announced that James would star in the film. SpringHill Entertainment also announced that the film would be directed by Terence Nance (Random Acts of Flyness) and produced by Ryan Coogler (Black Panther, Creed).

For now, James has work to do on the court. His Lakers are three games back of a playoff spot at 28-29. According to ESPN's BPI Playoff Odds, the team has only a 5.8% chance of making the postseason in James's first year with the Lakers.
