Even if the draft is still a few months away, some NBA team executives are already looking forward to it because of the level of talent the hopefuls have. One of them is potential top pick Lonzo Ball of UCLA.
The 6-foot-6 guard has been playing solid basketball this year for the Bruins, leading them in their current run in the NCAA tournament. However, his game has been overshadowed by the multitude of controversial comments made by his father, LaVar, which has drawn a lot of criticism towards their family.
For one lottery team though, the older Ball’s infamous statements might just be what they need to make his son available for them to draft. According to a piece made by David Aldridge on NBA.com, their executive believes the unwanted attention brought by LaVar is not helping his son’s case and will not boost his chances of being the number one pick, which will give them a better chance of stealing him.
“All the noise with the dad, I said, hopefully, that will shove him back to us,” said an executive of a team that’s likely going to be in the Lottery. “The old man is Don King. Tell me how he’s different from Earl Woods or Serena’s and Venus’s dad.
Lonzo Ball is not the consensus number one pick, but he is making a strong case for himself to be named just that. Other players being considered are Markelle Fultz and De’Aaron Fox who are both worthy as well of being chosen first overall this June.
If there’s one thing certain at this point, the younger Ball has a lot to prove especially when he enters the NBA to avoid receiving backlash. For what it’s worth, the lottery team executive may be right as there could be other teams who might opt to choose another player instead of Lonzo Ball. It will allow them to be free from dealing with his father, who has been trying to steal the spotlight from him and could also do the same to their team.
