This is a salary dump move by the Heat who are desperately trying to get over the luxury tax. This latest move from the Heat has done just that:
Miami will save $2.1m in luxury tax with the Jarnell Stokes trade to New Orleans. The Heat are now $2.6m above the tax.

The Heat, in return, will receive a protected pick from the Pelicans. The Pelicans haven’t made a decision yet if Stokes will be on their active roster or not, but he could be a nice young talent to bring off their bench as they continue to fight through their struggles this season.
