The NBA’s trade deadline is now two days away and the deals are finally coming.
Earlier, the Magic and Pistons swapped some big names in what was a surprising trade for some, and now three other teams have finalized their own deal.
According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, the Memphis Grizzlies are sending the Charlotte Hornets Courtney Lee. In return, the Grizzlies will receive PJ Hairston as well as two second round picks from both Charlotte and the Miami Heat (one of those picks from Miami is heavily protected).
Clearly, there’s a lot to digest here.

To break it down further:
- Hornets receive: Courtney Lee
- Hornets give up: Brian Roberts, PJ Hairston, two future second round picks
- Grizzlies receive: PJ Hairston, Chris Andersen, four future second round picks
- Grizzlies give up: Courtney Lee
- Heat receive: Brian Roberts
- Heat give up: Chris Andersen, two future second round picks
Lee is scoring 10 points per game in 29 minutes a night, but he can be deadly from 3-point range and help stretch the floor. Charlotte is right in the middle of the pack in terms of team 3-point percentage, tied with the Magic for 14th in the NBA. Lee will certainly help that cause.
Hairston and Roberts have been receiving 19 and 11 minutes per game respectively, so the Hornets aren’t giving up too much and Lee will probably eat up Hairston’s minutes and more anyway.
The Heat sent away Andersen aka Birdman but he’d only played 36 total minutes this season. The addition of Roberts will give Miami more depth at the point.
After a slow start, the Grizzlies had been playing well of late, but Marc Gasol‘s broken foot and the depth at the top of the Western Conference led Memphis to a move focused on the future. Hairston will take some of Lee’s old minutes, but the Grizzlies already have depth on the wing to distribute time to.
Their big haul in this is four future second round draft picks. It’s nice to have those assets to either use themselves or include in future trades down the line.
