Thompson was questionable to start against the Memphis Grizzlies two games ago with an illness, but got the nod to start an hour prior to the game.
Rookie Patrick McCaw is likely to get the start in his place, as he was bound to get the spot if Thompson couldn’t go on Friday — Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant will likely carry the offensive load in his absence while Ian Clark and Shaun Livingston will get extra minutes off the bench.
McCaw should be able to keep up just fine at the defensive end, but won’t be able to switch onto bigger men effectively because of his slight frame. His offensive game is a work in progress, but he has excellent vision for a player his age and can knock down the open shot.
Thompson seemed to play just fine against the Grizzlies and the Sacramento Kings, scoring 17 and 18 points respectively, but the Warriors are choosing to play it carefully. He is the team’s third-leading scorer, averaging 21.3 points per game.
