The Sacramento Kings did not have a successful 2015-16 season. They missed the playoffs even with a lineup better than previous years, at least on paper. They added Rajon Rondo to their fold then but still failed to make progress in the competitive Western Conference.

One of their key players, small forward Rudy Gay, recently spoke about the controversies, consistent trade rumors he's faced, and what really went wrong with his team last season in a Q&A with Sactown Royalty.

In the interview, Gay's response to being asked what direction the Kings are going was surprising, to say the least:

“I have no idea. I suit up and give it my all. That's all I can do in this situation, that's all you can do. Go out there and play as much as you can. Obviously, we don't have anything to really build on. We have a new coach. I think that's the only thing we can really build on. New coach and seeing how it plays out.”

Clearly he is very frustrated with the situation he's in with his team and feels he has no control the franchise. Gay added:

“A frustrating season turns into a frustrating summer. Like I said, I can only control what I can. I'm going out there and working hard this summer and taking care of my body, that comes first. The injuries that I've had, I took the time I had to take off and trying to come back next year better than ever.”

The University of Connecticut product has played consistently throughout his career. Last season was no different, as he averaged 17.2 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 34 minutes per game.

Despite Gay's consistent play, he's been caught on teams stuck in rebuild mode. It was the same as when he was in Memphis, when the team was forming their core players and looking for its own identity – an almost identical situation to what the Kings are doing now.

Next season, the Kings will have a new coach once again and DeMarcus Cousins will return after gaining valuable experience from his Team USA stint. Add in the free agent signings of Aaron Aflalo and Garrett Temple to play alongside Gay and Cousins, and all of Sacramento is hoping next season will be the breakout year and the season the Kings make it back to the playoffs.
