According to The Vertical’s Adrian Wojnarowski, point guard Russell Westbrook may have had issue with Kevin Durant‘s relationship with Draymond Green.
Wojnarowski discussed the issue on The Vertical's podcast Wednesday with ESPN commentator Jeff Van Gundy about how Westbrook was miffed at Durant not viewing the Warriors forward as an enemy while competing against them in the playoffs:
And there’s no question, I know Russell was bothered by — and some other teammates were too — of, like, there was some knowledge there that Draymond [Green] was in contact with Kevin [Durant] all season long and they’re in a playoff series and I know there was some conversation around the Thunder team of ‘hey man, this guy kicked Steven Adams in the nuts twice in this series and what are you doing hanging out with this guy? What’s the relationship? We’re trying to beat these guys.
While there has been no comment or confirmation from either of the players that there is a rift in their relationship, rumors and stories are surfacing that they weren’t in complete harmony, which led Durant to feeling the team had finally peaked and deciding it was time to move on.
Durant announcing his decision to sign with the Warriors has set off differing opinions like dynamite throughout the basketball world, and has even caused some to wonder if the Thunder have to completely start over without both of their star players.
Two things happened that raises eyebrows since Durant's decision on the Fourth of July. Westbrook posted a picture on his Instagram account of cupcakes that could be seen as a message about how he feels about Durant's choice, and secondly Westbrook was seen on the day of the announcement with a fan in Los Angeles, wearing a hat that expressed what was probably his emotion over the situation: “ughhhhhh.”
There is one thing you can count on happening without a doubt. The NBA will schedule the Warriors and Thunder as featured games throughout next season and push the story to the limits.
If Westbrook really is upset with Durant, he'll no doubt wear his emotions on his sleeves next season.
