For most of his career, Darrelle Revis has been not only the best cornerback in the NFL, but one of the best corners of all time. He regularly shut down or slowed some of the most athletic receivers to ever grace the league.

Now, he's getting burned by guys casual fans have never heard of on a weekly basis.

Revis Island simply isn't the place that it used to be. The Jets not only can't rely on Revis to defend the opposing number one wideout in single coverage anymore, they have to give him quite a bit of help.

Since his return to New York in 2015, Revis' play has steady declined. It wasn't until this season that it became such a glaring hole in the Jets' defense, though.

Heart not in it

Unable to play up to his previous level of excellence, Revis has apparently lost his love for the game. From a source close to Revis, via Manish Mehta of The New York Daily News:

“He's done,” a Revis confidant told the Daily News. “If he had his way, he'd be done right now. He doesn't want to play anymore. He's made a lot of money.”

While he can't say for certain what Revis is thinking, the Revis confidant put the cornerback's season this way: “He tanked it.”

So, will a football-depleted Revis consider retirement? Either way, his time in New York is likely coming to a close.

The salary cap is to tight in the NFL, so parting ways with the highly-priced Revis might be the Jets' best course of action if he doesn't accept a pay cut. After 2017, they can cut him without many salary cap ramifications, but if things get any worse, it could come a year early.
