Steve Kerr is too smart to fall into this trap.
Prior to the Golden State Warriors‘ highly-anticipated matchup with the Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday night, the Warriors head coach addressed recent reports that Golden State is a serious suitor for Thunder forward Kevin Durant, who is due to become a free agent this summer:
“It’s just speculation. I don’t know why anyone would talk about anything other than the fact we’re 45-4.”
Following Golden State’s 116-108 victory over Oklahoma City, the Warriors moved to 46-4 on the season. The 46-4 record is tied for the best 50-game start in NBA history.
While the prospect of arguably the game’s best offensive player joining the best offensive team is enough to make people giddy, the bottom line is the Warriors are concerned with their current team – as is Kevin Durant, who also recently spoke out on the rumors.
If the Warriors were a downtrodden team already looking forward to the offseason, this report may mean something to the franchise. But considering Golden State is looking to repeat as NBA champions, any idea of Durant signing with the Warriors is not even a thought within the organization right now.
