Atlanta Hawks center Tiago Splitter will miss an additional six weeks after sustaining a Grade 2 calf strain while rehabbing his injured hamstring, according to a team press release.

“While rehabbing from off-season hip surgery and related hamstring strain, Atlanta Hawks forward/center Tiago Splitter sustained a grade 2 right calf strain. An MRI performed at the Emory Orthopedics & Spine Center confirmed the injury.”

“He will be out a minimum of six weeks and his status will be updated as appropriate.”

The Brazilian big man has missed 63 regular season games and 10 playoff games since coming to Atlanta in a trade.

Splitter would have made a solid backup for Dwight Howard with his size and shooting ability, but the Hawks have proven to be a top defensive team without his help.

Mike Muscala has filled in admirably in his absence and sparked the team to a 10-7 record coming into Monday night's matchup against the Golden State Warriors.

The combination of Howard and versatile forward Paul Millsap have made a good tandem, with a deft inside-out game that can cause headaches to opposing defenses.
