Since trading DeMarcus Cousins before the trade deadline in February, the Sacramento Kings have given their young big men extended playing time to showcase their skills and gain valuable experience. One of them is rookie center Skal Labissiere, who has shown a lot of potential and made the most of the opportunity given to him.

The former Kentucky Wildcat has drawn a lot of praise, especially from general manager Vlade Divac. The 49-year-old general manger shared, via Ailene Voisin of the Sacramento Bee, what he thinks of the rookie's game.

“Skal can be special. He has size and skill, and he’s a great kid. We’re very, very lucky.”

Labissiere revealed his strong play of late has been possible because of his mindset, as well as being more comfortable now with the Kings.

“It’s just a mindset, and it’s something I had to work on. I try to get every rebound, every ball. I think it’s just wanting it a little bit more.”

“I’m feeling a little more comfortable out there. It’s me learning at my own pace, not getting rushed, learning how to see things on the court. It’s not about the next three or four games, it’s about the next couple years, learning how to play with each, develop our chemistry. I’m nowhere near (physically) where I want to be. But this should be a fun summer. Lots of time with the weights, and working on all aspects of my game.”

In 22 games since the Cousins trade, the 21-year-old Haitian has shown glimpses of his true potential, and even had a career game on March 15 against the Phoenix Suns, where he scored 32 points, and grabbed 11 rebounds.

With the team in rebuild mode, it can be expected that Labissiere will continue to see more action on the court as the Kings plan to further develop his game. He has not disappointed so far, and has given the Sacramento faithful plenty to be optimistic about moving forward.
