Last season, Anderson Varejao signed off waivers with the Golden State Warriors after 11 years with the team that went on to beat them in the NBA finals, the Cleveland Cavaliers. This summer, he has been re-signed by the Warriors, helping them keep some depth in their frontcourt. Varejao signed a one-year deal at the NBA veteran’s minimum.

This weekend, Varejao was pictures captured holding the Olympic torch in his home nation of Brazil as we build up to the Olympic Games in Rio.

The 33 year old has now returned to the U.S. to have his back examined after complaining of pain, according to the Bay Area News Group’s Diamond Leung.

The decision to have the ailment looked at is a precaution as he aims to represent his hosting country in the prestigious tournament. Still, could be a potential holdup.

The center played a cameo role in much of last season. He played in just 22 regular season games, but 17 playoff games. Varejao averaged 2.6 points and 2.7 rebounds in just 8.5 minutes per game, according to Basketball Reference.

Both fans of the Brazilian national team and the Warriors will hope that Varejao’s examination comes back without any major problems, as he looks toward a huge summer of hoops.
