Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga has screened for critics and the first reactions are in. George Miller co-wrote and directed the Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth-led film.
What is Furiosa?
Furiosa is a prequel to Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road. Fury Road was the fourth installment in the Mad Max franchise and made over $380 million at the box office. Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, and Nicholas Hoult starred in the film.
Nearly a decade later, Miller returns to the franchise. It takes place over a decade before the events of Fury Road.
The official synopsis of the film, per Collider, reads: As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland, they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.
Aside from Taylor-Joy and Hemsworth, Tom Burke, Luchy Hulme, Goran D. Kleut, and Nathan Jones will also star in the film.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will hold its world premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival on May 15. This is nine years to the day after Fury Road was released in theaters. Warner Bros will officially release the film on May 24 in the United States.

Critics are praising Furiosa in the first reactions. However, a common theme is that the film is not quite the same as Mad Max: Fury Road.
David Ehrlich of IndieWire called the film “really, *really* f**king good.” He did add that the film “operates in an extremely different gear than Fury Road (in ways that I suspect will frustrate some people), but also manages to make that movie even richer while carrying its own legend in the Wasteland.”
Josh Horowitz shared a similar sentiment. “Furiosa is not Fury Road and that's ok. It's not trying to be,” the reaction post began. “What it is is something uniquely gnarly and yes, epic.” They also praised the performances of Taylor-Joy, Hemsworth, and Burke.
Furiosa “is powerhouse action filmmaking at its absolute best!” Erik Davis said. “A ferocious & relentlessly paced epic that expands the story of Furiosa and the Wasteland while delivering the craziest chases, the most bombastic characters & just plain stunning cinematography.”
Nick's Flicks Fix called Furiosa “EPIC in every sense of the word.” They praised the world-building and its “explosive, exciting action.” While Anya Taylor-Joy is “great,” Chris Hemsworth is a scene-stealer and “shines in a way he hasn't before,” per Nick's Flicks Fix's reaction.
Simon Thompson alleges that Furiosa “engulfs you” as a viewer. They even say that the film's scope exceeds the IMAX screen.
