The New York Mets are getting some encouraging news. Mets hurler Kodai Senga is getting closer to returning from injury, per SNY. Senga is getting some throws Sunday in the bullpen, working on his technique.

The Mets pitcher is dealing with a shoulder strain, that has kept him off the mound for New York. The Mets are debating on whether to assign him to the minor leagues to get some work done on his mechanics, per the New York Post.

“I think we’ve had a good bullpen where he felt he was making some strides,” Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns said Thursday, per the New York Post.  “I don’t know exactly when we’ll get him out on a rehab assignment — that’s the next big step here — but I think we all feel better about it, maybe here than we did five or six days ago.”

Senga's health is extremely important to the club, who are dealing with a frustrating season so far. The Mets are 20-25 on the year, and have lost two in a row in a series with the Miami Marlins.

The Mets ace has been dealing with shoulder and arm fatigue all season. He's been extremely limited for the team, since showing up for Spring Training. Senga hasn't been able to make a single mound appearance in 2024, after having an outstanding season in 2023 for the Mets.

During the last campaign, the hurler finished with a 12-7 record and a 2.98 ERA. He also recorded 202 strikeouts, in more than 166 innings of work. The pitcher earned the respect of the MLB, as he finished second in National League Rookie of the Year balloting.

Senga said he's fine with getting some rehab work done, as he knows he's not throwing at 100 percent.

“All my power output was not going toward the catcher,” Senga said via interpreter, per ESPN. “I wasn't able to deliver 100% of it toward the catcher, which is very important. When that is happening, I'm more susceptible to getting hit and also more susceptible to injuries if that continues.”

Mets season without Senga

New York entered the 2024 season with a lot of hope and expectations. The team stumbled badly out of the gate, starting the year with a 0-5 record. The club has managed to go .500 the rest of the way, holding a record of 20-25.

The Mets are missing Senga greatly in their rotation. The team's pitching is giving up an ERA of 4.01, with two of their starting pitchers struggling with an earned run average over 10. Julio Teheran only lasted one disastrous start, and so did Joey Lucchesi. The team is trying to find the right combination to compensate for losing Senga, and the results aren't great so far. Mets fans are chomping at the bit to get Senga back in the rotation.

The Mets and Marlins face off again on Sunday. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:40 Eastern. Miami is 15-32 on the season.
