On Saturday, May 18th we finally crowned an undisputed heavyweight champion of the world and his name is Oleksandr “The Cat” Usyk. Usyk went to battle with Tyson Fury for arguably the greatest heavyweight fight in boxing history. The back-and-forth affair ended with Usyk getting his hands raised via a split decision (115-112, 113-114, 114-113).

The fight started off with Usyk stalking Fury trying to get past that long reach and get on the inside. He did a good job at corraling Fury against the ropes landing some beautiful body work that opened up the left hand to the head throughout the first two rounds. However, at the start of the third round, Fury started to get his timing down and boy did he. Fury was able to land his quick jab, double-jab, and stinging right hand over and over as Usyk attempted to be the aggressor.

Then in round 6, Fury landed a beautifully timed uppercut that staggered Usyk and had him on the retreat but as the veteran that Usyk is he was able to weather the storm and got out of the round. While it looked like it was going to be the turning point of the fight for Fury, it was Usyk that started to pull away in the second half of the fight just like he did after he got rocked in his fight against Anthony Joshua.

As the rounds progressed we saw a major turning point in round 9 when Usyk cracked Fury with an overhand left that had Fury on skates and stumbling all over the ring. Eventually, the ref stepped in for the count and he was saved by bell.

The remaining three rounds were very close and back-and-forth, as it looked like Fury, recovered from the beating he took in round 9. Both Fury and Usyk landed heavy shots from rounds 10-12 neither one separating themselves from the other as the final bell sounded at the end of round 12. As that final bell rang the arena erupted with cheers for both fighters who put on an amazing performance and one that boxing fans around the world will remember forever.

As the scorecards were being read many of those watching at the arena and those watching at home were scratching their heads as many did not know who won the fight. When the scorecards of 115-112, 113-114, 114-113 were read and Oleksandr Usyk was crowned the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world it was hard to argue with the scorecards because it was that close of the fight.

Of course, after the fight, Tyson Fury gives us the most Tyson Fury response as to his thoughts on the fight.

It remains to be seen what is next for the newly crowned undisputed heavyweight champion of the world but Tyson Fury has a rematch clause on his contract so we could potentially see a rematch sooner rather than later and no one will be upset with that. As for now, Oleksandr Usyk is the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis back in 1999-2000 and should be in the talks of being the No. 1 Pound-For-Pound best fighter in the world.
