The Atlanta Dream take on the Phoenix Mercury. Our WNBA odds series has our Dream Mercury prediction, odds, and pick. Find out how to watch Dream Mercury.

The Atlanta Dream are starting their WNBA regular season in the West. Their season opener was in Los Angeles against the Sparks. Atlanta's offense hummed with efficiency in a 92-81 win. The result doesn't mean that the Dream are on their way to a big season, but it does show that Atlanta is capable of winning the games it is supposed to win, including road games. The Dream have a very good chance of delivering a solid regular season if they can beat relatively equal or slightly inferior teams on the road. If they can clean up against the lower half of the WNBA, they could finish above .500, something they failed to do last season. (Only four teams had winning records last year in the 12-team league, and Atlanta was not one of them.)

If Atlanta can go into Phoenix and grab a second road win, the Dream will have good reason to think that they can forge a winning regular season.

The Mercury are 0-1, but they have reason to think they can be a good team. Why? Their loss was against the defending champion Las Vegas Aces. The Mercury put up a very good fight against the Aces as a double-digit underdog and lost by only nine. Vegas outscored Phoenix by 15 points in the first quarter, and it appeared that the Mercury were going to get run out of the building. Instead, Phoenix punched back and outscored the Aces by 14 points in the second quarter. The game was close at halftime. It was close after three quarters, with Vegas leading by only six points. Vegas did win, but it never really delivered a knockout punch. Phoenix remained competitive deep into the fourth quarter. Given how good the Aces are, the Mercury should derive some confidence from their ability to play a competitive 40-minute game versus the champs. Now, however, they need a win over Atlanta to feel they are truly on the right track.

Why The Dream Could Cover The Spread

The Dream were able to score 92 in their season opener. They now face a Phoenix team which just allowed 89 points in its season opener. Atlanta should be able to score a lot in this game. That will put a lot of pressure on the Phoenix offense to keep pace, and it will result in a game-flow situation where the Mercury won't have a lot of margin for error. Can Phoenix play enough defense to win this game? Skepticism is warranted.

Why The Mercury Could Cover The Spread

The Mercury covered the spread against defending champion Las Vegas on the road. Atlanta might be 1-0 and Phoenix might be 0-1, but the Mercury were impressive in their opener, arguably more so than the Dream were against a bad Los Angeles Sparks team. Phoenix is now at home and is getting a point. This is basically a pick 'em game, so you're getting a good price on a Mercury bet. It's an attractive proposition.
