The San Diego Padres take on the Atlanta Braves. Our MLB odds series has our  Padres Braves prediction and pick. Find out how to watch Padres Braves.

The San Diego Padres produced relatively ordinary results in home games in each of the past two seasons. They were only seven games above .500 at home in 2022. They were just seven games over .500 at home in 2023. For whatever reason, the Padres just can't play consistenty good baseball at Petco Park. This kept them out of the playoffs last season and made them one of the biggest disappointments in baseball.

This year, the Padres are 10-16 through 26 games at home. They once again are faceplanting at Petco. They would be in much bigger trouble if they weren't good on the road. Fortunately, they are managing to produce good results away from San Diego. They're 13-8 in 21 road games. They just did defeat the Atlanta Braves on Friday night in Georgia, winning 3-1 behind a dominant outing from starting pitcher Matt Waldron, who outdueled Max Fried.

The Padres have been a difficult team to bet on precisely because they underperform and because they aren't a typical team. Most teams are a lot better at home than on the road, but the Padres don't meet that description. We will see if the Padres can continue to succeed on the road, or if the Atlanta Braves can wake up their bats and get back into the win column on Sunday Night Baseball.

Why The Padres Could Cover The Spread

The Padres are going up against Atlanta starter Bryce Elder, who has been good this season but is not a front-end rotation guy. Elder is a back-end rotation pitcher, and the Padres have to feel that they can get to Elder over the course of the game. They might not rip him the first time around, but the second and third times through the batting order should give San Diego hitters some hittable pitches they can do something with.

If the Padres can score a modest four runs, they have a good chance of winning. If they can score five, they have a good chance of covering on the minus-1.5 run line. Yu Darvish has thrown 18 consecutive scoreless innings for San Diego. He is absolutely locked in, and he is facing an Atlanta lineup which has underperformed this season. Matt Olson's batting average has hovered around .200. Austin Riley has been injured and — when on the field — ineffective. Ronald Acuna is performing nowhere close to the elite standards he set in 2023. This Atlanta team just isn't producing at the level anyone expected. Darvish can shut them down.

Why The Braves Could Cover The Spread

The Braves are bound to start hitting. Darvish has been brilliant, but he is probably due for some regression. The laws of averages offer the best reason to pick the Braves.

Final Padres-Braves Prediction & Pick

The Braves are struggling so much at the plate but are going to start whacking the ball before too long. When will it begin, though? We don't know, and it all seems tenuous. Stay away from this game.
