The New Orleans Saints have had a rough offseason, to say the least. With just a few weeks away from the start of the NFL season, the coaching staff has yet to choose a starting quarterback. Additionally, Michael Thomas is ruled out for the first portion of the year, putting the Saints' offense in a state of turmoil.

Even so, New Orleans has had a few players stand out so far throughout training camp and the preseason. Furthermore, the Saints are still a talented enough team to make a playoff push late in the year. It'll be interesting to see how it all plays out, as this franchise has entered a new era with Drew Brees' departure.

The Saints kicked off training camp with a couple of players looking to earn a starting role on the offense. However, once practice was underway, they seem to have taken a step back rather than a step forward. These next two preseason games will be important for the Saints coaching staff, as they'll be evaluating the roster to make the best possible lineup. There could be two players losing their starting jobs, as the guys behind them on the depth chart have put on strong performances so far. With that said, here are two first-stringers on the Saints roster in danger of losing their starting jobs.

Saints Starters

Adam Trautman

After Jared Cook left New Orleans to join the Los Angeles Chargers, Adam Trautman has assumed the starting tight end position. He played a backup role throughout his rookie campaign, serving more as a blocking tight end than anything else. A ton of hyp has built around Trautman throughout the offseason, especially once Michael Thoms fell to injury.

Adam Trautman's blocking prowess will keep him on the field, however, he's in danger of losing the starting job to Juwan Johnson. The wide receiver turned tight end is in the second season of his career and served more as a blocking receiver throughout his rookie campaign. The Saints moved Johnson over to tight end where he's been thriving as a pass-catcher.

The two may co-exist in the Saints' offense. But with Johnson impressing throughout training camp and in the preseason opener, there's a reason to believe the Saints opt for Johnson over Trautman instead. That would leave Adam Trautman working in a similar role as last year, playing as a blocking tight end for the Saints.

Tre'Quan Smith

Tre'Quan Smith was originally in line to be the second option wide receiver in the Saints passing attack. After Thomas fell to injury though, many looked to Smith to fill the top role until Thomas' return. However, Smith has been sidelined with an injury himself and hasn't played well with his opportunities. Instead, Marquez Callaway has been a bright spot this offseason, as he's earning himself a vital role in the Saints' offense.

Callaway had a solid rookie season. He didn't play much but proved to be reliable whenever his number was called upon. Entering the second season of his career, Callaway has seized the opportunity with Thomas and Tre'Quan Smith sidelined. We'll see if Callaway can officially claim the starting role over Tre'Quan Smith in the Saints' next preseason matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the Superdome.
