Nik Stauskas is getting another shot at the NBA, with the Boston Celtics reportedly signing him to a two-year contract for the remainder of this season and the 2022-23 campaign.

It may have come as a shock for those who do not follow the NBA religiously, but it is certainly a well-deserved chance for a player who made everyone turn their heads to him after scoring 100 points in two G League games. While some would say that is a bloated statistic given the level of competition he faced, that is still not an easy feat. After all, not all former NBA players in the G League could even score 50.

The Celtics could certainly use some depth heading to the playoffs, especially as they continue their climb in the Eastern Conference standings. With that said, here are two things that the Nik Stauskas signing instantly brings to the Beantown team.

Nik Stauskas' Celtics Signings

2. Shooting Depth

Of course this is the biggest reason the Celtics quickly made a move to sign Nik Stauskas. As mentioned, he compiled 100 points in two G League games with the Grand Rapids Gold recently, first exploding for 57 points against the Wisconsin Herd before dropping 43 against the Lakeland Magic. In both instances, he shot at least 69 percent from deep–even going 11-of-15 from 3-point territory against the Herd.

Overall in the G League season, Stauskas is averaging 46.6 percent from beyond the arc. That's not from a small sample size either, given that he has already played 28 games for the Gold before the Celtics came to swoop him.

Boston needs a shooter, as they remain at the bottom half of the league when it comes to that department. They are ranked 22nd in 3-point percentage, which is not ideal for them heading to the postseason. Against Eastern Conference playoff teams that are efficient in that category–like the Chicago Bulls, Miami Heat, Milwaukee Bucks and Philadelphia 76ers–that could prove to be a major weakness that others could exploit.

Sure enough Stauskas won't fix all the 3-point shooting problems the Celtics have. It's even worth wondering how big of a role he would have given that Boston still has Payton Pritchard, but it surely helps to have a reliable veteran who is gaining more confidence in his shooting.

Sauce Castillo gives the Celtics some sort of a 3-point threat that could open the floor for stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. Hopefully, head coach Ime Udoka utilizes him more and he gets more playing time.

1. Quality Playmaking

It has become quite clear that Nik Stauskas has worked on his game beyond just his shooting. Coming to the NBA, his ability as a facilitator has been a a major talking point given the improvements he had during his collegiate days.

Unfortunately, throughout his tenure in the NBA, he has not really showcased that skill and it has been often overlooked. With the Gold, however, Stauskas has been making huge strides in that area. He's averaging 4.8 assists in the G League, all after tallying 3.8 dimes the season prior.

That is an encouraging sign for a player who had little NBA opportunity in recent years.

The Celtics have a plethora of guards at their disposal, but having a capable shooter who can create plays for others is huge and could be beneficial in the long run.

This is not to say that Stauskas is a game-changing player for Boston. There is still the possibility that he could struggle once again given his lack of foot speed and overall quickness–the same issues that have hounded him throughout his NBA career. Nonetheless, there is no doubt he is a solid pickup that could provide quality minutes and scoring when given the chance.

Celtics fans better hope for the best when it comes to Stauskas. If he can replicate some of his recent performances in the G League with Boston, it will definitely be exciting times once again.

Who knows, it might just be the opportunity Sauce Castillo needs to get his career back on track.
