With the Kevin Stallings era now far in the rear view mirror, things are starting to look up again for the Pittsburgh Panthers. The latest case in point is John Hugley, a four-star prospect out of the 2020 college basketball recruiting class, committing to the program on Friday.

This is a good get for several reasons, but it also highlights how much the program has grown. The Miami Hurricanes, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Cincinnati Bearcats, West Virginia Mountaineers, Florida Gators, Kansas State Wildcats, Florida State Seminoles, Missouri Tigers, Penn State, North Carolina State Wolfpack, and Connecticut Huskies were all once in the mix to land the young man. And yet, the Pittsburgh Panthers is the school that landed him.

A 6-foot-8 forward out of Ohio, John Hugley actually projects as a talent who develop pretty quickly when he hits campus. Furthermore, both the type who will likely be in college all four years and have a relatively high ceiling.

Not only do most reputable recruiting service outlets have John Hugley pegged as a four-star caliber player, but most tend to agree he’s floating around the top 120 (or so) best recruits in the entire 2020 class.

Regardless, this is a solid get for a program looking to return to form.
