The English Premier League is widely regarded to be the best league in the world, and the teams in England are working very hard to keep that reputation. Several teams from EPL were very active in the transfer window and improved their squads greatly. Here are the three best signings in the Premier League this year.

Romelu Lukaku – Inter to Chelsea, $135 million

The first one was very easy to choose, as the Champions League winners improved on their only fault from last year. While a lot of money has already been invested in this squad, especially for the likes of Kai Havertz, Hakim Ziyetch, Christian Pulisic and Timo Werner, Chelsea still had money to spend and decided to invest in their former player, Romelu Lukaku. Lukaku enjoyed a prolific spell for Inter Milan, scoring 47 league goals in 72 appearances, but it was clearly time to conquer the Premier League again.

Last year, the best goal-scorers were Tammy Abraham and Timo Werner with 12 goals in all competitions, which is not ideal for a squad aiming for all possible titles. With Lukaku, Chelsea bought a proven goalscorer, with immense experience in the EPL, having formerly played for WBA, Everton and Manchester United, with a spell at Chelsea at the beginning of his professional career.

In addition to the goal-scoring, Lukaku is an elite player in distribution, which is not properly shown with his stats. His assist numbers are fairly low, but his strength and proficiency in the air allow him to take the ball in certain positions and distribute it further to the midfield. Also, he had arguably the best midfield in Italy in Inter, and has the same in Chelsea, especially with the creativity of Havertz and Mason Mount coming from the wings, so playing with these elite players behind him, the Belgian will surely have a very successful spell at the Stamford Bridge as he looks to wreak havoc in the Premier League again.

Cristiano Ronaldo – Juventus to Manchester United, $17.75 million

It is very hard to exclude one of the best players from this list, as Cristiano Ronaldo's return to Old Trafford and the Premier League put the whole world in disarray, especially since a move to the Etihad was all but locked up. However, the Portuguese striker decided to return to Manchester United, where he will join a very potent attack that was already strengthened by the signing of Jadon Sancho earlier in the window.

Ronaldo has an incredible football resume, and he will definitely look to add a couple of more honors while in the ending chapters of his career. He will most likely arrive incredibly motivated to show everyone he is still in the discussion for the current best player in the world, even though most analysts leave him out of it due to the failings of his club in the last few Champions League campaigns. However, throughout his career, Ronaldo has shown a resiliency unmatched by any other player, as he always bounces back stronger and is even more determined to show everyone what he can do.

Of course, this transfer will not address the gaps in other areas of United's team, but when there is a chance to return a player of this magnitude, most clubs would not even think before acting. It will help their goal-scoring efforts, however, as Edinson Cavani will be out due to quarantine measures after returning from national duty. Also, other than Mason Greenwood who is showing an incredible amount of potential, other options in the middle of the attack for the Premier League giants have not been up to the standard. Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford do not have the consistency that a perennial contender for the EPL title needs. Ronaldo will definitely fit in perfectly to address these needs specifically.

Ibrahima Konate – RB Leipzig to Liverpool, $48.1 million

While it was tempting to put Raphael Varane or Jack Grealish in this section, it seems like the Ibrahima Konate transfer fits in perfectly here. The 22-year-old French center-back impressed while playing for the German team for the past four years and it was widely expected that he will move on. Liverpool was able to trigger his release clause and they got a world-class defender to share the center of the park with Virgin Van Dijk. Of course, the options for Liverpool in the middle and their limits were shown last year, with Nathaniel Phillips and Rhys Williams securing most apps for the Merseyside team in the center-back position. Injuries to Van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez completely destroyed any hope of recreating the immense success of the past two seasons, and the season ended with an early exit from the Champions League and a barely secured third place in the Premier League.

However, with Konate in the middle, these concerns will be less visible. Konate is very similar to Van Dijk and they will definitely make a strong partnership. Also, as it was mentioned before, he is just 22 and as the rest of the backline grows older, Konate, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andy Robertson, and Joe Gomez should guarantee a strong defense going forward for the 6-time Champions League winners.

In the long-term, of course, this is great business by Jurgen Klopp. However, in the short term, the German mastermind has a lot of options at the back. The distribution of minutes across all these very good players in the center-back role will be one of the things to watch in the upcoming season.

Altogether, the Premier League teams spent over a billion dollars in this window, and many teams made some great moves that were, unfortunately, not included in this list. Some of them can be mentioned here as great pieces of business, such as the signings of Emiliano Buendia, Leon Bailey and Danny Ings, all made by Aston Villa after the sale of Jack Grealish. It can definitely be said that the money City gave up for the England international was properly used and Villa will be a tricky opponent and not a team that will fall easily.

Overall, it was a very bombastic window, but it still feels like Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool will be the ones fighting for a championship. Of course, the Red Devils will be patiently waiting for any slip-up to capitalize and try to win the title for the first time since 2013.
