With one of their best offensive playmakers out the door and questions surrounding their remaining skill players, the Kansas City Chiefs will need to overcome a few off-season storylines. While the trade market is not commonly used by teams to make impactful additions, the Chiefs roster would certainly benefit if they chose that route.

Chiefs Trade Targets To Complete 2022 Roster

Michael Thomas – WR
New Orleans Saints

Are there any signs that would point to the Chiefs wanting to target Michael Thomas as their next potential WR1? No, but then again, Kansas City tends to run a tight-lipped ship under Andy Reid.

While the Chiefs are in their own version of salary cap hell, the Saints are worse than them, sitting around $20 million over. Acquiring Michael Thomas would free the Saints of some current and long-term financial ramifications, while the Chiefs would be taking a huge gamble on a player that is known for what he has done in the past, just not recently.

Of the three targets, Michael Thomas is the unlikeliest of the bunch, but with the current state of the wide receiver group for the Chiefs, they would be smart to at least inquire.

Logan Thomas – TE
Washington Commanders

As a pass-catcher on the Washington Commanders, TE Logan Thomas has enjoyed success after making the transition over from QB. With the Commanders struggling to find exactly what kind of a team they want to be, shipping out a player like Logan Thomas could be an option.

There seems to be no semblance of good front-office members within this team, but their three-year extension that was ultimately signed by Logan Thomas was one of their better moves. With the deal structured that after the first year of his new deal (after the 2022-23 season) the team can move on, any acquisition of Logan Thomas by the Chiefs could result in a short, one-year rental, especially if he does not perform.

Thomas has been a steadying force for Washington, and with Travis Kelce still uber-efficient but getting up there in age, finding a potential long-term solution in Logan Thomas would be a smart way to go.

Harrison Smith – S
Minnesota Vikings

With the departure of Tyrann Mathieu, the Chiefs' defensive unit is on the lookout for its next star safety. Even with the addition of former Texans safety Justin Reid, targeting Minnesota’s Harrison Smith in a deal would be a good move for both sides involved.

For the Chiefs, they would be able to seamlessly transition from Mathieu to Smith, all while not really experiencing too much of a drop-off between the two options. Injury concerns certainly can hold Smith back, but when he is on the field, he is still a top-10 safety in the league.

The Vikings would be able to accumulate more draft capital, all the while trying their best to help usher in the next wave of potential defensive mainstays, ones that would earn far more playing time upon Smith’s departure. Being 33 already certainly will phase him out of defensive plans at some point, but being locked into his deal for the next four years certainly brings some stability to any deal including him.
