The Denver Nuggets defeated the Utah Jazz 135-125 in overtime on Monday in a Game 1 thriller. Donovan Mitchell exploded for 57 points—the third-highest scoring total in a playoff game in NBA history—with nine rebounds and a team-best seven assists in the loss. The third-seeded Nuggets were led by Jamal Murray (36 points, 10 coming in OT) and All-Star Nikola Jokic, who generated 29 points with a game-high 10 rebounds.

What does Game 2 have in store? Here are three predictions for the second contest of the Western Conference quarterfinal series.

Jordan Clarkson scores 22+ points

The Jazz can’t expect Mitchell to score 50+ points every game. With Bojan Bogdanović (wrist) sidelined for the season and Mike Conley (personal) out again for Game 2, Jordan Clarkson will continue to hold a major role on offense.

Clarkson, Utah’s sixth man throughout the season, is on the floor for one reason: to get buckets. The 28-year-old combo guard averaged a paltry 1.9 assists in 2019-20. He is an elite scorer, however, as evidenced by his 15.2 points per contest off the bench. Clarkson accumulated a postseason career-high 18 points in the Game 1 defeat on 8-of-17 shooting.

Capable of scoring in bunches, Clarkson will log at least 22 points in Game 2. He benefits the most from Conley’s absence. In 710 minutes with Conley off the court, Clarkson has registered a per-36 line of 21.3 points with 3.1 three-pointers. Clarkson went 2-for-9 from 3-point territory in Game 1, an area he will likely improve next time around.

Rudy Gobert grabs playoff career-high in rebounds

Rudy Gobert collected just seven rebounds in Game 1. The All-Star center did produce 17 points and four blocks, so it’s not as if he wasn’t a force for Utah. Nonetheless, the 7-footer ranked fourth in the NBA in rebounding (13.5 per contest) this season and needs a better outing on the glass.

Fill-in starter Juwan Morgan and Royce O’Neal grabbed the same number of boards as Gobert last contest. Backup center Tony Bradley and Mitchell tied for the team lead in rebounds with nine.

Utah’s defense is partly to blame for Gobert securing only seven rebounds. They yielded 115 points in regulation and 20 more in overtime, an uncharacteristic amount for a club that ranked ninth in defense.

The Jazz will be better on defense and Gobert will snatch more rebounds as a result. Gobert notched a playoff career-high in rebounds with 16 in 2017, but he will surpass that total in Game 2.

Michael Porter Jr. drops 20+ points

Nuggets rookie forward Michael Porter Jr. has been thrust into the starting lineup due to the knee injury of Will Barton. Barton missed every one of the Nuggets’ seeding games and remains sidelined. Porter Jr. took advantage of the opportunity, producing 22.0 points (55.1% shooting), 8.6 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.0 steals in seven Orlando bubble games. His excellence in the seeding games earned him a spot on the NBA’s All-Bubble second team.

Porter Jr. had a solid playoff debut, posting 13 points with eight rebounds in 31 minutes. He shot efficiently (5-of-13), going 3-for-7 on 3’s. He will likely take more than 13 shots in Game 2. The 22-year-old forward has elevated himself into the third option of Denver’s offense, behind only Jokic and Murray.

As the Nuggets look to seize a commanding 2-0 series advantage, it will be Porter Jr. who improves his scoring total most from Game 1. Porter Jr., who had a 37-point outing in one of the seeding contests, will score over 20 points in Game 2.
