What a rough offseason it has been for Dave Gettleman and the New York Giants. First, they traded Odell Beckham Jr. and Olivier Vernon. Plus, they watched Landon Collins walk in free agency.

Then, fans were officially fed up when the Giants used the sixth overall pick on Daniel Jones instead of Dwayne Haskins or one of the top defensive players available, such as Josh Allen. Instead, they watched Haskins land with the Washington Redskins in the NFC East.

Heading into 2019, it seems Eli Manning will be under center again and Saquon Barkley will be relied upon as the main focal point of the offense. Manning will likely start for the Giants until his arm completely falls off.

Barkley was one of the only bright spots for the Giants in 2018. In his rookie campaign, Barkley led the NFL with 2,028 yards from scrimmage and took home the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award.

With training camp rapidly approaching, the Giants have a few players who will need those practices to improve themselves for the upcoming season. Here are three players who have the most to gain in training camp this season with New York.

3. Dexter Lawrence

Before the 2018 trade deadline, the Giants shipped Damon Harrison to the Detroit Lions. As a result, the Giants' run defense got noticeably worse while the Lions drastically improved.

In this year's draft, New York focused on replacing Harrison in the middle of the defensive line. The Giants held another first-round pick besides the sixth pick; they selected Dexter Lawrence.

Lawrence was a stout run defender at Clemson. The Giants drafted him to be exactly that in New York. At Clemson, Lawrence totaled 131 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, and 10 sacks.

The Clemson product isn't a renowned pass rusher, but he could use training camp to improve his pass-rush moves. So far, Lawrence has worked with the first-teamers this offseason and should be able to secure that spot with a solid training camp.

2. Sam Beal

The most important player for the Giants in 2019 may be Sam Beal. He was taken by the Giants in the third round of the 2018 NFL Supplemental Draft. How'd he end up there?

There were no off-field issues for Beal, he simply fell behind in credits; his eligibility in the NCAA was at risk. Therefore, instead of waiting for a possible disappointing decision from the NCAA, Beal wanted to go pro.

Furthermore, Beal decided to forgo his senior season at Western Michigan. Now he is expected to start opposite Janoris Jenkins. Nonetheless, the skills are absolutely there for Beal, he just needs to display them on the field.

With Jenkins due over $10 million over the next two seasons, don't be surprised if New York moves him before this year's trade deadline. After all, the Giants drafted Deandre Baker and Julian Love to possibly replace him. If Beal impresses as the Giants expect, he could be the Giants' plan at their number one cornerback spot.

1. Daniel Jones

The Giants are going to begin training camp with Manning under center with the starters, but Daniel Jones could work his way up. Or could he?

Pat Shurmur has left the door wide open on whether the Giants will have a battle at the quarterback position. When asked about the situation, the Giants' head coach simply said, “We’re going to play the very best player.” So if Jones has a terrific training camp, he could start in Week 1?

That's doubtful for the time being. Manning knows the offense and what Shurmur wants to get done. Yet, Jones will need as many reps as he can to soak in the offense and the timing of everything.

Jones hears the noise from fans in New York, but all the rookie quarterback can do is prepare himself to be the starter at some point. After all, with Manning under center, there is a chance that Jones will get some action in 2019.
