The Indianapolis Colts made the big decision to sign veteran star quarterback Philip Rivers to a one-year, $25 million contract in the offseason. It was a move that many thought would be a massive upgrade over Jacoby Brissett, who was the team's starting quarterback last season. Rivers has been an upgrade, but there are a lot of fans who have been frustrated with his game.

Rivers has always been a quarterback that takes risks. He has always made a boneheaded play or two every game. But, he has also been a quarterback who has put up big all-around numbers in addition to those mistakes.

Unfortunately, more times than not, the mistakes have come back to bite Rivers. He has never won a Super Bowl in his impressive career. That could change with the Colts this season, but in all likelihood they will not be able to compete with the Kansas City Chiefs.

So far this season, Rivers has completed 67.3 percent of his pass attempts for 2,978 yards, 16 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. The numbers aren't horrible, but the reason for frustration is obvious. Rivers has made quite a few mistakes and some of those turnovers have come back to cost the Colts a win.

At 38 years old, Rivers is in the final stage of his career. He may have another year left in him after this season, but could also choose to retire. Even if he chooses to come back, the Colts could very well end up looking to replace him with another quarterback.

Let's operate as if the Colts are going to move on from Rivers this coming offseason. They have quite a few options to choose from if they look elsewhere. Here are three quarterbacks they could target to become their starting quarterback.

3. Jameis Winston, New Orleans Saints

One potential option could be Jameis Winston, although many Colts fans would be unhappy with this move as well. Winston has a huge arm and put up massive numbers with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season. Unfortunately, he is much more turnover prone than even Rivers, as Winston threw 30 interceptions.

In addition to those 30 interceptions, however, Winston racked up 5,109 yards and 33 touchdowns. He showed that he can put up big numbers, but he still needs to cut down on his mistakes.

Playing with the Saints this season, Winston has had the opportunity to learn behind Drew Brees and be coached by Sean Payton. Those two things alone should help him take a step. At just 26 years old, Winston could become an option for the Colts, although it isn't the best option they could have.

2. Dak Prescott, Dallas Cowboys

There is a lot of uncertainty about what will happen with Prescott and the Cowboys this coming offseason. He suffered a gruesome season-ending ankle injury early in the year and will hit free agency again in the offseason. Jerry Jones is expected to pay up to keep him, but no one truly knows what will happen.

For a team like the Colts, paying out big money to bring in a long-term franchise quarterback like Prescott would make a ton of sense. No one would argue that signing Prescott to a big deal would be a mistake for Indianapolis. In fact, Prescott could be the missing piece that comes in and takes this Indianapolis team to a Super Bowl.

Prescott is widely expected to end up back with the Cowboys. This may not be a super realistic option, but at this point it is still an option. Chris Ballard should be monitoring this situation closely and the Colts should take a swing if they get a chance.

1. Kyle Trask, Florida Gators

Finally, let's take a look at an option the Colts could look into in the 2021 NFL Draft. Kyle Trask is one of the top quarterbacks in college football and is currently a candidate to win the Heisman Trophy. Taking a young quarterback and building around him could be of interest to Indianapolis.

Trask has completed 71.4 percent of his pass attempts this year with the Gators. He has also racked up 2,810 passing yards, 34 touchdowns, and only three interceptions. Those numbers show why Trask is such an intriguing talent in this draft class.

Ballard and company could also simply give Jacob Eason a chance to win the starting job. They drafted him with the No. 122 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft and he turned some heads in training camp. However, if the Colts look to bring in another young quarterback, Trask could very well end up being available in the end of the first round.
