San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans is a deserving candidate for a head coaching job in 2022. The 49ers had a very successful season, shocking the world by making it to the NFC Championship Game.
The defense has been the catalyst for their success as they held the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers to minimal gains. The Cowboys only scored 17 points against the 49ers, while the Packers only scored 10 points. The 49ers defense neutralized reigning MVP Aaron Rodgers at Lambeau Field. He threw for 4,115 yards along with 37 touchdowns and four interceptions in the regular season. But against San Francisco, Rodgers threw for 225 yards and zero touchdowns.
Ryans has done a great job replacing Robert Saleh, who got a head coaching job with the New York Jets this season. It's not easy stopping a phenomenal player like Rodgers, but Ryans' schemes were able to counter star-studded offenses.
Here are three reasons why DeMeco Ryans deserves an NFL head coaching job in 2022.
3. He is a great leader
An underrated aspect when picking a head coach is their leadership ability. Many guys don't pan out even if they were a great defensive or offensive coordinator.
Ryans has led the locker room for the 49ers defense and helped the unit remain a dominant one. Teams should be more intrigued in hiring him due to his leadership qualities.
2. He has great defensive schemes
Ryans' defensive schemes have been integral in the 49ers' deep playoff run. Their defense is the reason they had success this season. The pass rush has been revitalized with Nick Bosa leading the way, which has covered up their inconsistency in the secondary.
Bosa posted a career-high 15.5 sacks and 21 tackles for loss. His dominant season and presence also freed up other pass rushers to get to the quarterback. This creates a near-unstoppable front to go up against, which allows them to play with a four or five-man front. That helps the weak secondary as they can put more players back without having to blitz.
1. He has playoff success
The 49ers had a great season despite a slow start. They squeaked into the postseason and have been underdogs in each of their matchups. Ryans was also a part of the 49ers' Super Bowl run a couple of years ago when they were defeated by the Kansas City Chiefs.
His defense has been instrumental in their amazing campaign. He would make a great head coach for any of the open vacancies as he could instantly transform their defense. His experience in the postseason would provide much-needed leadership in situations where it matters most.
Ryans is set to have a second interview with the Minnesota Vikings. The team fired Mike Zimmer, and bringing in a new tactician could help the squad get back to the NFL Playoffs. They have a talented roster with great players at skill positions but haven't had a solid unit on defense.
Ryans could fix their defense with his schemes, which could have them competing with the Packers for the division title.
