The quarterback situation for the Washington Football Team has been a question mark for a while now and the solution for this season was the longtime journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick. Unfortunately for Fitzpatrick and the Football Team, he will miss at least the next three weeks (one report says it's likely six to eight weeks) after being placed on injured reserve following a Week 1 injury. The solution for replacing Ryan Fitzpatrick is simple. Bring in Cam Newton. It makes sense and here are a few reasons why.

1. Head Coach Ron Rivera and Cam Newton know each other very well

A lot of times when a quarterback like Newton is available in season they aren't signed because it takes a while for quarterbacks to get acclimated to playing in a new system with new coaches. Luckily for the Washington Football Team, Newton and Rivera spent time together from 2011 to 2019 with the Carolina Panthers so reuniting makes sense. This begs the question of why this hasn't happened yet but, maybe Ron Rivera just hasn't been desperate enough to convince the Washington front office to bring him in.

The two could have reunited in the past, but instead the Football Team has opted to bring in guys like Ryan Fitzpatrick or roll with Dwayne Haskins. It's at least worth a shot to bring in Newton now.

2. This Washington team is ready to win this season

The Washington Football Team is coming off a division title, albeit a 7-9 clinching season. The NFC East can be taken by anyone this season, including the Football Team. It's hard for a team to claim they're trying to win every week while trotting Taylor Heinicke out to play quarterback for a quarter of the season.

Heinicke has shown flashes of being a capable starting quarterback, but there's a reason he's only played in a handful of games at 28 years old. Heinicke would be a solid backup for Newton but relying on him to start could be a mistake.

Does it make more sense to rely on the not-so-great quarterback who's been around the team or bring in a better quarterback who hasn't been with the team but is more advanced? If Heinicke was a developing quarterback with a future as the main guy in Washington then maybe it'd be smart to give him the reps but right now it just doesn't make sense. Bring in Newton, let him figure things out and start him over Heinicke in Week 3.

3. Newton could still play an important role when Fitzpatrick returns

If the Washington Football Team brings in Cam Newton and he plays poorly for a few weeks what happens? The team can simply cut him and Fitzpatrick slides right back in.

What if Newton is brought in and plays pretty well? Well, that's a good problem to have once Fitzpatrick returns. The likely result would be that Fitzpatrick slides back into the starting role and Newton becomes the primary backup. Even if Fitzpatrick were fully healthy, Newton would be a nice backup to have on the roster.

Having a backup better than Heinicke makes a ton of sense for this Washington Football Team. Fitzpatrick at 38 years old isn't exactly in the peak psychical shape of his life. To go with the age and the overall wear and tear on his body he now has this hip injury that could linger or get worse even after Fitzpatrick returns. If that were to happen, being able to go to Newton instead of Heinicke makes a lot of sense. For a team trying to win this season, the best move is to bring in Cam Newton to play quarterback.
