The Golden State Warriors are still exploring options to improve their roster, specifically at the point guard position. The team has been adamant about looking for a backup for Stephen Curry. Free-agent Darren Collison could be the player the Dubs need.

Collison has been in retirement since 2019. He last played for the Indiana Pacers. Collison appeared in 76 games and was the starting point guard in each. He averaged 11.2 points on 46.7% shooting and 40.7% from deep.

Warriors Darren Collison keys:

Experience

Sources told ClutchPoints Collison is still unsure if he’ll come out of retirement, but his scheduled workout with the Warriors indicates he’s open to the right situation. If he does come out of retirement and sign with the Warriors, there are three reasons he could be the perfect fit.

The first reason would be Collison's experience. He's played for 10 years in the NBA. In that time, he's been a starter and a reserve. No matter what role he's played, he's always been very productive. Playing with the Warriors, he would be on the second unit and have time to work his way back into NBA shape if needed.

Mentorship

When having young players on the roster, putting veteran leadership on the court with them is helpful. Sometimes a player like Collison can serve as another coach on the floor.

During his time away from the NBA, he developed his skills training program called Pro's Vision. In his facility, he mainly focused on developing young players and giving them a professional experience they can't get anywhere else.

Having another basketball mind around, helping to pass down knowledge to players such as James Wiseman, Jonathan Kuminga, Moses Moody, and Jordan Poole could positively affect the Warriors' future.

The Warriors will be juggling winning this year with developing young players. Bringing on Collison can help make this an easier process.

Shooting

Lastly, you can never have too much shooting. In Collison's career, he is a 39.4% shooter from deep. That means he's a knockdown shooter. The great thing about him is he developed the skill of being a spot-up shooter. Many don't understand, but having the ability to catch and shoot is highly valued.

When the Dubs have Curry and Klay Thompson on the floor giving opposing teams nightmares, open shot opportunities will be there for other teammates. When those situations present themselves, the supporting cast has to be ready to let it fly. In catch-and-shoot cases, Collison shoots at 44%, and when he's left open, he hits at 43.9%. He's been away from the NBA for some time, but shooting never leaves.

If the Warriors were to pick up Collison, he would be a perfect addition as long as he's committed. Right now, it's still up in the air, but after this workout, things can change.
