The New York Yankees have been the subject of many rumors when it comes to big-name free agents this MLB offseason. The Yankees have been linked to names such as Corey Seager, Carlos Correa, or Justin Verlander. However, New York might be better served by filling in some of the gaps on their roster with some smaller-name free agents.

There are three underrated free agents that would fit the Yankees particularly well.

Jose Iglesias

Jose Iglesias is not a name that's going to get Yankees fans jumping out of their seats. That doesn't mean he wouldn't be a savvy MLB free agent signing.

Iglesias, 32, has played in the big leagues for 10 seasons, accumulating a career slash line of .277/.318/.382. There is almost no power to his bat, but one area Iglesias excels and the Yankees do not, is at making contact.

The veteran shortstop has posted above average contact rates while striking out in less than 15 percent of plate appearances in each of the last five seasons. Iglesias is also solid with the glove, having twice led the MLB in fielding percentage as a shortstop.

Having Iglesias on the roster would allow the Yankees to fill a void at shortstop without breaking the bank. He could help balance out their slugger-heavy lineup while playing good defense. Iglesias is a capable stopgap free agent shortstop until top prospects Oswald Perez and Anthony Volpe are ready for the majors.

Odubel Herrera

Former Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Odubel Herrera would also make sense as a freee agent addition for the Yankees. Herrera is coming off of a solid season for the Phillies, where he posted a .726 OPS with 13 homers while batting .260.

The 29-year-old center fielder owns a respectable .274 career batting average, has some speed in his game, with 62 career stolen bases in six seasons, and is a great defender.

Herrera ranked 12th among all center fielders in the Statcast statistic ‘Outs Above Average', which tracks how good a defender is compared to a league average player at that position.

With Aaron Hicks proving to be injury-prone, the Yankees need more consistency out of the center field spot. Herrera makes them more contact-oriented and athletic, two traits general manager Brian Cashman said he wants to prioritize when looking for free agents.

Corey Knebel

An MLB team can never have too many relief pitchers. The Yankees have been known to have many high-octane relievers to throw at teams in the late innings in recent years.

However, the New York bullpen faltered at times last year, partly due to injuries but also due to certain players, such as Aroldis Chapman, underachieving at times. The club could use another dependable late-inning option for manager Aaron Boone.

Corey Knebel could be the perfect free agent for New York. Knebel has been a bit inconsistent in his career but was excellent for the Los Angeles Dodgers last year, pitching to a 2.45 ERA in 25 2/3 innings while posting a strikeout rate a hair under 30 percent.

Knebel is a strike-thrower armed with an excellent fastball-curveball combo. He's only 30 years old and wouldn't cost the Yankees much as a free agent.

Knebel also has closing experience, having saved 39 games for the Milwaukee Brewers in an All-Star 2017 season. he could close out games for the Yankees in a pinch if injuries were to take a toll on the back-end of New York's bullpen.

Knebel isn't the sexiest name but he could make the Yankees bullpen significantly better in 2022.

The Yankees could make themselves better by signing these three underrated free agents.
