The San Francisco 49ers made serious efforts to revamp their injury-plagued receiving corps as of late. Unfortunately, it appears they have suffered yet another setback.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, wide receiver J.J. Nelson is expected to miss the start of the 2020 NFL season with knee injury:

With the start of the 2020 campaign just two weeks away, Nelson is slated to miss at least two games before making his return. This now once again leaves San Francisco with plenty of questions regarding their current depth for this group

Nelson is just the latest casualty of the injury bug that has plagued the receiving corps since the 49ers are already without Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, Richie James, and Jalen Hurd. Although head coach Kyle Shanahan is optimistic that Samuel and Aiyuk will be back for the season opener against the Arizona Cardinals, James is expected to miss some significant time while Hurd has been effectively ruled out for the season.

Although losing another piece to the passing game is hardly ideal, San Francisco is one of the few teams uniquely equipped to overcome it thanks to their elite run game. Having tight end George Kittle in the mix for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo also serves as a stabilizing factor in this offense.

Regardless, the 49ers will eventually need to show they are more than capable of relying on Garoppolo's arm if they intend to finish the job this season.
