Jason Verrett’s road to recovery has been derailed by yet another leg injury. The San Francisco 49ers cornerback has suffered a hamstring injury, although its severity is yet to be determined, according to general manager John Lynch, via ProFootballTalk.

This is yet another setback for Verrett’s injury-plagued career. The 29-year-old, who was drafted with the 25th overall pick in the first round by the Chargers in 2014, played just one game for the 49ers in the 2019 season after signing a one-year contract with the team. Verrett later re-signed with San Francisco in April. Since entering the league, he has gone on to play just 26 games for the Chargers and the 49ers.

His best season came in 2015, when he missed just two games, and was selected to the Pro Bowl. But injuries hounded him in the succeeding years, limiting him to just two games in the last two seasons.

The injury could deal a serious blow to his chances of having a starting job for the 49ers by the time the season starts. Verrett is already competing against starter Emmanuel Moseley and another young cornerback in Akhello Witherspoon, also a former starter. The 24-year-old Moseley, in particular, was a revelation during San Francisco’s run to the Super Bowl last season, and could end up earning the position opposite veteran Richard Sherman.

However, as the extent of the injury is not yet clear at the moment, Verrett could still return and use his veteran smarts to earn the trust of coach Kyle Shanahan, defensive coordinator Robert Saleh and the team’s other coaches and secure the starting job when the season begins for the banged-up NFC West club.
