The San Francisco 49ers and Arik Armstead were able to negotiate a long-term deal before the legal tampering period began on Monday. After becoming one of the highest-paid defensive linemen in the NFL, Armstead reacted to signing his new deal with San Francisco.

ā€œIā€™m excited to continue my career with the 49ers, the organization that gave me a chance by drafting me five years ago,ā€ Armstead said in a statement. ā€œI want to thank the York family, John, Kyle and Paraag for acknowledging what Iā€™ve done, both on and off the field, for this team since 2015. They have given me the platform to give back to my community and play the game I love at the highest level, and I am just getting started.ā€

The 49ers selected Armstead 17th overall in the 2015 NFL Draft out of Oregon. The former Duck failed to live up to expectations in his first four seasons. He combined for nine sacks and a forced fumble in that span.

However, in the final year of his rookie contract, Armstead delivered. The 6-foot-7 defensive end posted a career-high 10 sacks and two forced fumbles in 2019. Besides leading the team in sacks, Armstead also notched 11 tackles for loss and 18 quarterback hits.

To pay him for his efforts, San Francisco inked Armstead to a five-year, $85 million contract on Monday. While Armstead received a massive payday, the 49ers chose to trade DeForest Buckner to the Indianapolis Colts.

Nevertheless, after redeeming himself in 2019, Armstead is smiling as he gets to remain in the Bay Area for another five years.
