It doesn't look like Arik Armstead is going anywhere. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the San Francisco 49ers are re-signing Armstead on a five-year deal that will be worth up to $85 million.

The 49ers entered the offseason with limited cap space, which had many wondering if the club would be able to retain Armstead, but the defensive lineman made it clear that he wanted to remain in San Francisco, and clearly, the feeling was mutual.

Armstead is coming off of a breakout 2019 campaign in which he played every game and racked up 54 tackles, 10 sacks, a couple of forced fumbles and a fumble recovery, playing a pivotal role on a dominant Niners defense that made it all the way to the Super Bowl before falling to the Kansas City Chiefs.

The 26-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Oregon, was originally selected by the 49ers in the first round (17th pick overall) of the 2015 NFL Draft.

He appeared in every contest during his rookie year, finishing with 19 tackles and a pair of sacks. Then, over the next two season, Armstead was inhibited by injuries, as he participated in just 14 games combined between 2016 and 2017.

The Sacramento native returned to play in all 16 games in 2018, totaling 48 tackles and three sacks, but he did not flash his true potential until this past season.

As a result of Armstead's sudden breakout campaign, some have questioned if his production was the result of him actually realizing his talent or the product of a contract year.

Guess we'll find out in 2020.
