Frank Gore would be delighted to return to his original home, if the opportunity presented itself.

The veteran running back said Friday on 95.7 The Game he would welcome the chance to play for the San Francisco 49ers, the team that drafted him back in 2005:

“Man, I’d love to wear that No. 21 jersey one more time,” Gore said, via Field Yates of ESPN. “If that was to happen, that would definitely be my last year, if I could come back and sign with the 49ers.”

Gore started in 14 of 15 games for the New York Jets this past season, amassing 653 yards on 187 carries.

Although the 37-year-old is in the twilight of his career, signing with San Francisco would undoubtedly bring back a wealth of memories for Niners fans.

Gore burst onto the scene in his sophomore season, rushing for 1,695 yards in 2006 and also tallying 2,180 yards from scrimmage. He went on to post 1,000-yard rushing seasons in seven of his next eight seasons with the 49ers, making four more Pro Bowls during that span.

The former Miami star's effectiveness has waned since his San Francisco days. He had another 1,000-yard season in Indianapolis and averaged 4.6 yards per carry with the Miami Dolphins in 2018, but has been under 4.0 yards per carry in five of the last six seasons.

Still, the NFL's third all-time rushing leader is revered as a veteran leader and mentor for young players. He might also have the opportunity to win his first Super Bowl in San Francisco if the Niners can stay healthy.

Whether the 49ers actually have interest in a reunion remains to be seen. But Gore would love to end his storied career in San Francisco.
