The San Francisco 49ers have managed to punch their ticket to Super Bowl LIV following a stellar 2019 NFL season. Whether or not they win, this could be the final run for tight end Garrett Celek.

According to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports, Celek acknowledged the possibility of retirement in the offseason:

When asked if retirement is an option, Celek answered, “I don’t know, yet. That’s something I’ll have to face once the season is over. I’ll try to figure it out.”

The 2019 campaign was a lost one for Celek after he was placed on reserve/PUP to begin the season following surgery to repair a herniated disk. He managed to return for five games to help with the depth at tight end until he was placed on injured reserve with the lingering back injury in December.

Celek has spent his entire career in San Francisco after arriving as an undrafted free agent out of Michigan State in 2012. The timing could not be better after making it to the Super Bowl in his first season. Although they were unable to come away with a win the first time around, he is hoping that his career will potentially come full circle against the Kansas City Chiefs.

There are few players that get to begin and end their career with a trip to the Super Bowl. While a victory this time around would certainly make for an ideal finish, there are a number of factors Celek will have to consider once the time comes to make the decision.
