After eight seasons in the NFL, San Fransisco 49ers tight end Garrett Celek is hanging up his cleats. The veteran tight end announced his retirement on his Instagram Friday.

After four seasons at Michigan State, Celek would go undrafted in the 2012 NFL Draft. The 6-foot-5, 252-pound tight end would sign with the Niners as an undrafted free agent in 2012 and would spend the next eight seasons with the team.

In his NFL career, Celek totaled 82 catches for 1,104 yards and 12 touchdowns. Celek's best year came in 2017 when he started 13 games for San Fransisco, catching 21 passes for 336 yards and four touchdowns.

The end of Celek's career has been riddled with injuries as the former Spartan started this season on the physically unable to perform list due to an offseason back surgery. Celek was also put on injured reserve in December, effectively ending his season.

In total, Celek appeared in just five games in 2019 and was held without a single catch or target in those games.

The emergence of Niners star tight end George Kittle has certainly pushed Celek down the depth chart in recent years and at 31 years old, Celek decided it was time to retire.

With Celek now retired and both Ross Dwelley and Levine Toilolo set to become free agents this season, the position of backup tight end in San Fransisco becomes a bit of a mystery for the time being.
