San Francisco 49ers star cornerback Richard Sherman hasn't played since Week 1 due to a calf injury. But this hasn't prevented general manager John Lynch from being optimistic about Sherman's return to the field this NFL season.

Lynch was a guest on NBC Sports Bay Area's 49ers Game Plan and he gave the latest update on Sherman's recovery.

“Hopeful, with Sherm we are (expecting a return this season). I’m keeping my fingers crossed because this has been a stubborn one. I think (he) had a setback at some point. They did another procedure, some sort of an injection where they put some sort of fluid in there.”

The 32-year-old Sherman is one of the highest-paid defensive players in the NFL. The former Super Bowl champion had a stellar campaign last year but his follow-up this season was put to a grinding halt just after Week 1. He has yet to participate in practice sessions with his team.

Sherman, however, also remains positive on the sidelines, even cheering on his seldom-used teammate Richie James, who had a solid game in their loss 34-17 to the Green Bay Packers on Thursday with nine catches for 184 yards and a touchdown.

Lynch also gave an update on another injured 49ers player in defensive end Dee Ford. Though he was optimistic about Sherman's status like their coach Kyle Shanahan, he isn't quite sure if Ford—also one of the highest-paid defensive players in the league—is going to return this season.

“Dee, is still very much up in the air. When you’re dealing with your back and things, the center of your body, there’s a lot of things that are unpredictable and so, Dee is working hard and trying to find his way back. So whether that happens or not, hopeful, I don’t know, but we’re still leaving that door open.”

The 49ers are at the bottom of the NFC West with a 4-5 record. They will next face the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.
