The Cleveland Browns are widely expected to trade Josh Gordon today, and the San Francisco 49ers are one of the contenders to land the talented wide receiver, who also has them as one of his top two destinations. However, legendary 49ers wideout Jerry Rice would rather not see his old team go after Gordon.

In an appearance on 95.7 The Game, Rice expressed his concerns about the 49ers pursuing Gordon, who, while extremely talented, can provide his share of headaches.

“A great athlete but I don't think he has his head on straight because this guy is very talented and I think Cleveland, they have done everything possible to give him so many opportunities,” Rice said on the “Joe, Lo & Dibs” show. “To show up for a meeting late, that had to be really discouraging to the team.”

“I would stay away. I think the guy is a great athlete, but it's just way too much going on with him. I don't think he's totally committed. He probably, no doubt, would just come in and do the same thing with the San Francisco 49ers. So, no, I would stay away from that.”

It’s understandable to see where Rice is coming from with his apprehension about Gordon. It’s hard to ignore all of his personal baggage through the years. Even the Browns finally reached their breaking point with him after giving him chance after chance to prove himself.

At the same time, though, Gordon’s All-Pro-caliber ability is just too tempting for a team in need of a top playmaker — like the 49ers — to pass up. So despite concerns Rice and many other people likely share about Gordon, the 49ers and several other teams will likely continue their pursuit of the potentially game-changing talent.
