49ers’ Jimmy Garoppolo admits he hears all the criticism about him
Jimmy Garoppolo is headed to Super Bowl LIV after leading the San Francisco 49ers through an incredible season. However, that doesn’t stop the critics from lashing out at him.
Jimmy GQ admitted ahead of his first Super Bowl as a starting quarterback that he’s hearing all of the criticisms thrown his and Richard Sherman’s way. However, his lack of reaction puts a stark contract to how Sherman brushes off his opponents. It seems that he’s adamant in letting his football do the talking for him.
“[E]veryone has different ways to get motivated, and very similar to [Richard Sherman] I do the same thing,” Garoppolo said, in response to whether, like Sherman, Garoppolo uses slights as motivation. “I hear all the stuff and everything, but you can’t put that all out there all the time. You have to do with it what you will and take it for what it is. Just at the end of the day you’ve got to go out there and play football.”
Garoppolo should have no reason to doubt himself after helping the team to a Super Bowl win. In his first full season as a starter, Jimmy Garoppolo finished with 3978 passing yards and 27 touchdowns. He was also accurate with his passes, completing 69% of his attempts.
Much of the questions may come from his less-than-desirable performances in the playoffs. Against the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers, Jimmy Garoppolo has only notched 208 passing yards and one touchdown. This is starkly underwhelming compared to Mahomes’ monster performance against the Houston Texans last time out.
However, all Jimmy Garoppolo has to do to quiet those critics is to win. After all, Super Bowl rings speak louder than stats.
